Is preschool necessary?

Is preschool necessary?

The debate is ongoing. Do I need to send my preschool children to preschool or are they at home as well? Lets look at several considerations as the ultimate decisions are up to each childs parents. These considerations are not in a special order.

An important consideration in determining the cost. Can your family afford it? Many communities now offer preschool as part of their public education. Some offer preschool to those who are low-income or those who have a child who develops late. In these cases there is no charge for the parents.

But this is the exception and not the rule. So, every family must look at the cost of sending their child and see if it fits into its budget for one or two years.

Is there a parent at home who can qualify to teach preschool at home? Some parents have degrees in early childhood education while others have learned themselves. If this is not the case in your home, you can send your child to someone who is better qualified.

When you go to kindergarten, there are expectations that your child will have some basic graduates under their belt. Preschool used to be the place to start learning numbers and letters, but in most school districts it is not so. Your child is expected to have these basic ideas started but not necessarily mastered when they go to kindergarten. Preschool can give them this reason.

Another consideration in determining the need for preschool is the childs personality. If your child is drawn, shy or worried about other children, it is important to expose them to pre-school so they will interact with other children. This will bring them out of the shell and they will learn how to play with others in their own age.

If your child is out and has the opportunity to be around other children, his own age out of the home, the need for preschool is not so urgent. If your child is out, he or she may get bored to stay at home all the time. Preschool can be their excitement, something to look forward to. Try to think about these personality differences when making a decision about your pre-school child.

Your child must be outside of his comfort zone. They must be able to work without mom or dad around. They need to feel comfortable in an environment outside their home. Preschool offers this setting.

You may find an option like lessons of some kind like gymnastics, a playgroup, a football or a ball team or by shopping with other mothers. The opportunity for this social interaction is crucial for your pre-school children before going to kindergarten.

How old is your preschool? If he / she just missed the time limit for kindergarten, do you want them to miss some form of formal education in another year while they are waiting to enter public school? Preschool not only provides basic education, it gives them the social interaction they need.

Preschool not only helps to interact with their peers, it also helps them interact with adults. A preschooler learns how to wait, how to listen, how to follow instructions, how to sit, how to lift his hand and how to learn. A good preschool has a routine, a schedule that is followed.

Be sure to ask to see the daily schedule before choosing a preschool. It should include time for free games, art, music, gym, circle time, story time and snack. It should also include a theme for the week as well.

By carefully researching a preschool, you can find one that meets all of these needs. You do not want to choose day care centers and you do not just want to have childcare for your child. You want a facility that teaches and where your child will learn. Learning will take place because the environment and routine are set for learning. It should encourage learning without a pressure to learn.

Now the parent has a decision that is paramount. Are they going to send their preschool children to preschool or are they going to try to create an environment for learning and social interaction at home and elsewhere? Best wishes with this critical decision.
